O' what a sight!

One of the most spectacular sights of Nature in South Florida is seeing a Roseate Spoonbill, one of the most striking birds found in North America.

The bear skin of the adult's head has a greenish tinge with a darker black band around the base of the skull. The eyes and legs are red. The feathers of the neck, chest, and upper back are white. The upper wing coverts are red, the tail feathers are orange-pink and the rest of the body and wing feathers are pale pink.
The unique pale grey bill is long, flattened and spoonlike in appearance. Immature birds are paler in color.

Every Nature photographer, or anyone in Florida with a camera, wants a picture of a Spoonbill in their portfolio. I was lucky yesterday morning when a at least five Spoonbills descended in the preserve behind our home.  I was there, camera in hand.

Here is a sample of the photo images I was able to capture.

These five photo images are only a sample. From 6:55 AM to 8:20 AM I took 958 images. Now, I'm in the process of evaluating, deleting, editing, etc.  I hope you enjoy.    JPK 12-14-2010

The beauty, tranquility and beast of nature!

Long before the developers brought highways, the railroad, hotels, attractions, and housing to South Florida it was much like the Everglades. In recent years, there has been a movement to mitigate the over-development damage and return Florida to its original state. There are few better examples of this than Palm Beach County's Wakodahatchee Wetlands near Delray Beach. Most of the photos in this blog posting were taken at Wakodahatchee early December 2010.
Over 140 species of wildlife live on this site that has been given back to nature.

A Pied-billed Grebe.
An American Coot taking off.

Nature has its cruel side, too!

A special Thanksgiving!

Knowing that Cree Ann, Mary and Ed had not visited with us in our Palm Beach Gardens home, and that Cree, Mary, Richard and I had not been together for a Thanksgiving since the early 1960's, Connie and I thought it would be wonderful to have everyone for a Thanksgiving visit. We extended an early invitation, that was accepted by all.

Knowing that the four Kearns children had spent their formative years growing up and living in Lakeland, Florida made this trip to the Sunshine State somewhat of a home coming. Cree, Richard, Mary and Ed journeyed to Connie's and John's after visiting familiar sites in Tampa, Lakeland and Orlando.

Spending Thanksgiving together gave everyone the opportunity to spend quality time together. We had all seen each other periodically at the usual, i.e. weddings, wakes, funerals plus several special birthdays, graduations and reunions. These events are usually appropriately centered on someone else.

Connie's and John's in Palm Beach Gardens and the surrounding venues offer a perfect place the "four Kearns children" to get acquainted again.

Much time was spent sitting, chatting, reminiscing, recalling Mom, Dad, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, vacations, schools, the parish, i.e. all those people, places, things and experiences that make a life time.

The following is a "morning after" pictorial snapshot review of November 24 - 30, 2010.

There are more photos and thoughts to share. I plan to do that in the very near future via a online created book.  Right now, enjoy the following!

In pursuit of our passions!

Being very pleased with the results of the November 11th PGA National Member's Art Show we moved on to learn and develope new skills in the painting and photography.

I attended a four hour class, Black and White Photography, taught by accomplished photographer Steve Dumond.

Connie has signed up for a workshop, Watercolor Painting - Beyond the Basics by known watercolor artist Sue Archer.

Last Saturday, I attended another four hour class.  Portraits in Nature also taught by Steven DuMond.

Both of the DuMond classes were taught at nearby Grassy Waters Preserve. The purpose of Grassy Waters is to manage, protect and enhance the remnant Everglades ecosystem that supplies fresh water  to people in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach and South Palm Beach. One might call it a miniture Everglades!

Knowing I had my new Digital SLR camera with me Steve was kind enough to
spend several hours showing me the plants, insects and creatures of Grassy Waters plus coaching me in the use of the DSLR.

For your info, Steve DuMond's new book The Beauty of Grassy Waters Preserve - A Photo Journey is hot off the press. If you love the beauty of the Florida Everglades you will want this book in your library.

The following is an example of photo's I took last Saturday.  Enjoy!

We wish everyone a Very Happy Thanksgiving Holiday filled with Peace and Happiness!

Love,
Connie and John
